Experiences of violent child rearing and its reproduction with children

Abstract
This study involved conducting a cross-sectional survey with the participation of 180 mothers and 32 fathers who are parents of children aged 2 to 17 years. Using binary logistic regression, violent child rearing practices experienced by parents when they were children themselves were analyzed as predictors of being violent with their own children. The effects of having received psychological support, the quality of a couple's relationship, levels of self-esteem and family structures were also analyzed by the authors with the hope that these variables might reduce violent parenting practices. The results of the study show that the different forms of violence experienced when they were children increase the probability that the parents will use these specific forms of violence against their own children. There was no evidence that higher levels of self-esteem among parents or having received psychological support have an impact on the reproduction of this violence.
