Adolescent perpetrators of sexual assault: Relationship between orphanhood and perceptions of violence

Abstract
Sexual assault is a multifactorial phenomenon whose practice may be associated with exposure to adverse experiences during childhood, such as orphanhood. The aim of this study was to describe how violence and orphanhood manifested themselves in the lives of six adolescent perpetrators of sexual assault, relating these aspects to the perceptions they expressed. This is an exploratory-descriptive study using multiple case studies. The findings indicate that although non-orphaned adolescents are also exposed to adversity, the number of adverse experiences among orphans was significantly higher, a factor described in the literature as a risk factor for aggressive behavior. Considering
that perpetrators of aggression are characterized as a heterogeneous group, the analysis of the orphanhood
variable makes it possible to observe particularities among the subgroups, contributing to the development of prevention policies.
