Coping and academic burnout in Mexico, university risk profiles
Main Article Content
Abstract
Academic burnout affects university students who are going through a crucial stage of development. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of coping styles on burnout, its prevalence, and vulnerable profiles in a sample of university students from a public institution in central Mexico. Relevant groups were compared, and the relationship between variables was analyzed. 56.6 % had low/ no burnout levels, while 14 % had high/very high levels. Three vulnerable profiles were identified: being female, being in the first semesters, and studying health-related degrees. Significant relationships were found between burnout and coping. Negative self-focus and problem-solving focus explained 13.4 % of the variance [F(2.1729) = 135.101; p = .000]. Greater use of the former and less use of the latter indicated higher levels of burnout. The need to design preventive programs promoting adaptive coping strategies is emphasized.
